It's the first week of January 2021, and the 2020 elections are over. In my home state of Georgia, the votes from the runoff races were being tabulated. There were three statewide races on the ballot: two U.S. Senate seats and one Public Service Commission seat.

Powerlifting starts season with win

Coach Casey Arruda’s powerlifting teams picked up where they left off last season. That meant they were dominant again as they opened the 2021 season in Panhandle. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams outlifted the competition at the Panhandle Invitational Meet on Saturday.

Several arrests made

Crimes were again few and far between the past week, but the county jail was busy. Leticia Olivas, 821 S. Baylor, reported her cell phone had been stolen from her residence.

PHS Principal’s Honor Roll

Perryton High School has listed the students making the principal’s honor roll for the second nine weeks. To be eligible, students must have an average of 89.5 or higher.

Ochiltree County’s first baby of 2021 was born last week at Ochiltree General Hospital. Arely Gamez was born on Jan. 5 at 5:54 p.m. Her parents are Evelyn Olvera and Roberto Gamez, and she was delivered by Dr. Blake DeWitt. Arely weighed seven pounds, nine ounces and measured 19.5 inches.

COVID-19 cases up again in county

Active COVID-19 cases in Ochiltree County are on the rise again. According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Ochiltree County’s estimated active cases of COVID-19 stand at 92, up from 84 on Thursday.

Chamber seeking nominations for Citizen of Year award

The Perryton-Ochiltree Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the prestigious Citizen of the Year award, which will be presented at the Chamber’s annual banquet on Feb. 25. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, Jan. 22, at 5 p.m.

City’s sales tax payment drops 10% in January

The City of Perryton’s January sales tax payment didn’t kick off the new year to a great start. The city received a payment of $168,470, down a little over 10% from the January 2020 payment. Most area cities, however, did notch an increase in their January payments.
