SECOND PLACE NON-PROFIT FLOAT—Ochiltree County residents lined Main Street Aug. 21 to watch the annual Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration parade. The second place prize for the Non-Profit Float category went to Ochiltree County 4-H.

Active COVID-19 cases on the rise

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Ochiltree County have jumped upwards late this week. According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Ochiltree County’s estimated active cases of COVID-19 have risen to 34, up from 28 on Tuesday afternoon.

HOMECOMING QUEEN CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED

The candidates for Football Homecoming Queen at Perryton High School have been announced. The new Homecoming Queen will be chosen by the football team and crowned during the Perryton Rangers game against Caprock on Friday, Sept. 10, at Ranger Field.

Record crowd

When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, it became the site of the largest crowd ever assembled in America. More than 200,000 people gathered as close as they could near the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., where Dr. King spoke.

On Sept. 1, 2021, the Ochiltree County Sheriff’s Department had outstanding warrants on the following people: Mario Roberto Padilla, white male. Date of birth, Nov. 11, 1966. Height, 5’11”, weight, 147 pounds. Brown eyes, black hair. Last known address was Perryton.

Thermometer Bug

Tree crickets are called the poor man’s thermometer because temperature directly affects their rate of activity. Count the number of chirps a cricket makes in 15 seconds, then add 37. The sum will be very close to the outside temperature.

SECOND PLACE COMMERCIAL—It seems like everyone turned out to watch the Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration parade Aug. 21 down Main Street. Grass Snatchers took home the second place prize in the Commercial Float category.

Weed eater stolen

Crime reports were very few the past week. Brenda Evans, 1221 S. Drake, reported a weed eater had been stolen from the residence. It was valued at $150. Aaron Youtsey, 914 Michigan, told police someone had thrown a milk shake all over his pickup and driveway.

Demolition Derby winners announced

This year’s Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration, the Demolition Derby, was held Saturday night at the Ochiltree County Arena. The prizes for Limited Weld went to Shad Turner of Geneva, NE in first place, Adam Klein of Minneapolis, KS in second, and Josh Turner of Geneva, NE in third.
