Marfa, Texas was named after Marfa Strogoff, a character in Jules Verne’s novel “Michael Strogoff.”

Hello, Darlin’

Country and rockabilly musician Conway Twitty’s real name was Harold Lloyd Jenkins. He didn’t think his real name was marketable enough, so he took his stage name from Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas, a small town in the eastern Texas Panhandle.

To G or Not to G

Collingsworth County is named for James Collinsworth, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first chief justice of the Republic of Texas. You’ll note that Collingsworth County is spelled with a G, while James Collinsworth is not.

Pickup is stolen from car lot

A stolen pickup, a vehicle burglary and vandalism were investigated by police during the week. Chihuahua Auto Sales, 622 S. Main, reported a pickup stolen from the car lot. The 2013 black GMC Sierra pickup was later spotted at a convenience store when the suspect asked a man for gas money.

Farmers Market to continue The Ochiltree County Farmers Market will continue for at least the first two Saturdays in September. The market is held at the Perryton National Bank parking lot from 8 a.m-1 p.m. on Saturdays.
