Big snowfall hit Perryton in 1938

One of the biggest snowfalls on record hit Perryton on April 7, 1938, when a nine inch snowfall was whipped into 20 foot drifts by high winds, blocking traffic and stopping all business activity for several days. The storm hit while school was in progress, preventing rural students from going home.

Canadian Road paved in ‘37

Travel between Perryton and Canadian became much easier in October 1937 when the new black top pavement was opened between the two towns. This cut the distance to Canadian nine miles, making the route only 43.8 miles as compared with more than 60 miles the old way by dirt road.

Perryton had top polo team

Polo is not always a sport for the rich. Back in 1937, Perryton had a polo team which was very successful in matches around the country and the team played before crowds at the polo field on the north side of town.

Beer outlawed by ‘37 election

After having legal beer in Perryton for almost four years, Perryton citizens went to the polls on March 20, 1937, and voted the town dry again. There were 420 votes for prohibition and 313 votes against it, giving the drys a margin of 107 votes.

Perryton Ranger football dates back to 1922 when the first team was organized, with a coach hired by local merchants and who was not even a member of the school faculty.
