Texas DPS offers resources and tips ahead of new school year

As the new school year nears, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds drivers to use extra caution in and around school zones and neighborhoods. This includes knowing the Texas laws about driving near stopped school buses and not using cell phones when you’re behind the wheel.

Wheatheart Celebration continues this coming week

Ochiltree County’s annual Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration’s spotlight events, including the Block Party, the parade, and Pioneer Day, are scheduled for nthis coming week. On Saturday, Aug. 13, American Legion Post 254 held the Seth Huston Memorial Poker Run.

City’s sales tax payment is up 14% in August

The City of Perryton saw another healthy increase in its sales tax allocation this month. The August payment was up almost 14% for the month. For the year so far, it is up 24% over 2021 payments, with $2.188 million received.

Perryton schools start the new school year this Wednesday, Aug. 17, and Perryton Independent School District teachers spent last week attending meetings, compiling lesson plans, and getting their classrooms in shape for new students.

Teachers conducted a scavenger hunt to get to know their new hometown, capped with some social time at the Pink Rose Book Shop. Teachers began work Aug. 8 as they prepare for the new school year, and the first day of classes is set for Wednesday, Aug. 17.
