The Rangerette basketball team held a comfortable lead heading into the second half of Friday’s game against the Hooker Lady Bulldogs. Unfortunately, an injury and struggling to score led to the demise of the Rettes in the game, as they lost by the final score of 60-51.
Perryton’s season long leading scorer, Gisselle Hernandez, led the Rettes in the first half. She scored 9 points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second. The Rangerettes trailed by the score of 21-18 at the end of the first quarter but built a lead of 36-29 at the half.
Morgyn Vela and Mackenzi Stokes each nailed a three-point shot in the first quarter. Johanna Perez hit a bucket inside the arc while Tori Rivera went 1 of 2 from the free throw line. Hooker converted on 3 three-point baskets to take the lead as time expired in the first period.
Stokes scored 5 more points in the second quarter while Perez scored 2 more points to add to Hernandez’s 11 points for the halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs got hot again in the third quarter to take the lead for good. They scored 19 points in the period. Hernandez scored 5 more points in the period before leaving the game with an injury. Perez converted on a one-and-one and Rivera connected on a three-point shot for Perryton’s total of 11 points.
Buckets were very difficult for the Rettes to convert in the fourth quarter. Perez and Stokes each scored 2 points for Perryton’s total of 4 in the quarter. Hooker scored 12 points to win the game going away.
Hernandez led all scorers with 25 points. Stokes had a very good game with 10 points. Perez shot well to total 9 points. Rivera scored 4 points while Vela finished with 3 points in the loss.
The Rettes converted 12 two-point shots and 6 threepoint buckets in the game. They shot 9 of 12 for 75% from the free throw line in the loss. The extent of Hernandez’s injury was not reported at press time.
The loss brings the Rettes’ season record to 7-3. They are averaging 49 points per game while holding opponents to 41 points per outing.
