Celebration kicks into high gear this week

The Wheatheart of the Nation Celebration will kick into high gear this week, with several events scheduled. Although Celebration events have been scaled back this year, several activities are still planned. The Chamber Block Party is set for Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5-8 p.m. on Main Street.

Perryton students headed back to classes this week in a new age of smaller classes, facemasks, and social distancing. This included students in Dana Walker’s fifth grade math class at Williams Intermediate School as they learned the finer points of fractions.

Some people have the ability to survive potentially negative events and not only thrive, but also find creative avenues to help others. Shannon Simmons is one of these people. She is the adopted daughter of Glen and Joan Quist and graduated from Perryton High School in 2009.

Sept. 11, 2001 commemorated

Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On Sept. 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States.

Library announces adjusted hours

Perry Memorial Library has announced new hours. The library will be open from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, and from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Patrons who are at high risk can call ahead to make appointments to come in at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Perryton Golf Classic set

The Perryton Golf Classic will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $100 per team for the two person shamble. Special contests include a Team Skins Game at $20 a team and mulligans for $10 per player. The classic is limited to the first 36 teams who sign up.

Child Find underway

The Perryton ISD is looking for children ages 3-21 years who may be slow in developing communication skills, social interactions, walking skills and or have major physical disabilities.

SSA to destroy records

The Perryton Special Education SSA is giving notice tat special education records of students with disabilities (including speech) who graduated or were dismissed from special education on or before June 10, 2013 of the 2012-13 school will be destroyed.

2020 PHS Reunion postponed

The 2020 Perryton High School Ex-Students and Ex-Teachers Reunion has been postponed until fall 2021 due to current challenges. The reunion was originally scheduled for August. For reunion updates go to the “PHS All Classes Reunion” Facebook page.

Farmers Market set for Saturdays

The Ochiltree County Farmers Market at the Perryton National Bank parking lot will continue every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through August. Vendors of fruits and vegetables, as well as handmade and homemade items are welcome. The fee for a vendor table is $25 per season.
