The Perryton Rangers were firing on all cylinders Friday night at Ranger Field, came away with a big 34-7 win over the Levelland Lobos in their district opener.

The Rangers dominated playing time, and racked up 318 total yards to Levelland’s 96. Perryton converted an interception into points and scored on 5 of its 10 possessions. The Levelland offense never scored, with their only touchdown coming on a Ranger turnover in the third quarter.

Levelland was up first in the game, but despite getting one first down, had to punt. Perryton went to work, and marched 73 yards down the field to score their first touchdown with 4:00 left in the first period. Strong runs by Jahir Romero and Brenton Heeter took the Rangers to the Lobo 9 yard line. From there quarterback Abraham Hernandez took the ball in for 7. The extra point by Tony Cervantes was good and Perryton led 7-0.

The Lobos next possession was short, as Ranger Isaac Gabriel picked off quarterback Bryant White, setting up Perryton’s next score and taking it to the Levelland 18 yardline. After a short 1 yard gain by Pepper Haley, Heeter scampered 18 yards into the end zone with 2:42 left in the period. Again. Cervantes extra point was good and Perryton was up 14-0. Early in the second quarter, the Rangers were forced to punt, but the Lobos muffed the return, and the Rangers were back in business at the Lobo 44 yard line. Again, good runs by Heeter and Romero soon had Perryton at the 7 yard line. Romero got the call, and scored on a 7 yard run. The extra point was no good, but the Rangers went into the half with a 20-0 lead.

The Rangers took their time, opening up the second half. Starting at their own 25 yard line, Romero and Heeter made big runs down the field to set up Perryton at the Lobo’s 11 yard line. Romero made his second trip into the end zone on an 11 yard run. The extra point was good, and the Rangers increased their lead to 27-0 with 5:59 to go in the quarter. After trading possessions, the Rangers were making their way down the field again, when an untimely fumble by Perryton was scooped up by Lobo Christian Smith to finally put Levelland on the board with 18 seconds left in the third.

The Rangers took their time on their next drive, which began at their own 30 yard line. Some of the big gainers were Romero with a 15 yard run, and a 25 yard pass completion from Hernandez to Ramon Alvidrez to put Perryton at the Lobo 14 yard line Three plays later, Romero made his third trip into the end zone on a 3 yard run. The extra point was good, and Perryton increased their already substantial lead to 34-7 with 6 minutes left in the game.

The Ranger defense stepped up the rest of the fourth quarter. The Lobos were threatening on the Ranger 9 yard line late in the period. Lobo quarterback White was trying to make something out of nothing, and had to settle for nothing when Romero sacked him for a 20 yard loss on second down. The Lobos ended up having to punt, and from there, the Rangers ran out the clock.

Perryton will travel to Lubbock on Thursday for their second district match up. Game time is 7 p.m.
