Collingsworth County is named for James Collinsworth, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first chief justice of the Republic of Texas. You’ll note that Collingsworth County is spelled with a G, while James Collinsworth is not. A recording error in the bill naming the county is to blame for the spelling error, which has never been corrected.
