The Rangerettes picked up two back to back wins in court action last week.
Rettes v. Stratford
It was story of two halves on Tuesday night at Ranger Gym. The Rangerette basketball team hosted the Stratford Lady Elks. Perryton looked to pick up their first win of the young season. Stratford is always a good measure in which to test the team’s progress in the early season.
Perryton started slowly and trailed by the score of 18-12 at the half. They chipped away at the lead in the third quarter before exploding for 16 points in the final stanza to win by the final score of 40-37.
Erin Merkel led the Rettes in the first quarter by scoring 4 of the team’s 7 points. Tonya Navarrete knocked down a deep three-point shot in the period. Perryton trailed 10-7 as time expired in the period. Points were difficult for the Rettes to obtain in the second quarter. They were held to a three-point shot by Molly McGaughy and single free throws by Samantha Ramirez and Navarrete.
Perryton stormed back in the second half. Ramirez led the Rangerette’s charge in the third period by going 4 for 4 from the charity stripe. Navarrete and Mackenzi Stokes tossed in three-point buckets to add to Merkel’s 2 points. Stratford led 26-24 entering the finale.
Despite only converting on 56% of their free throws in the fourth quarter, the Rettes hustled behind Ramirez’s 7 points and Stokes’ 5 points to take the lead and seal the victory.
Ramirez led all scorers with 12 points. She shot 80% from the free throw line going 8 of 10. Merkel finished strongly with 9 points. Navarrete and Stokes totaled 8 points each in the victory. McGaughy rounded out the totals for Perryton with 3 points.
Perryton scored on 5 three-point and 5 two-point baskets. They shot below their first game performance at the free throw with a 58% total by going 15 of 26. Stratford only made 5 trips to the free throw line going 2 of 5 for 40%.
Rettes v. Stratford
The Rangerette basketball team took their 1-1 record on the road to White Deer on Saturday. Aggressive defensive pressure created turnovers and Perryton controlled the boards as they won going away by the final score of 48-27.
Full court defensive pressure placed the Ranger-ettes in control early in the game. Perryton led 11-1 at the end of the first quarter. Molly McGaughy and Erin Merkel each poured in 4 points to lead Perryton.
Foul trouble began to hamper White Deer in the second quarter. Perryton went 7 of 10 from the line in the period as they extended their lead to the score of 24-11 at the half. Merkel led Perryton with 6 points in the quarter.
McGaughy led Perryton in the third quarter with 5 points and Merkel worked for 4 points in the paint. The Rettes led the Does by the score of 37-21 entering the final stanza.
Foul issues returned for White Deer in the fourth quarter. Two of their five starters fouled out trying to guard the Rettes. Tonya Navarrete, Mariana Valenzuela and Samantha Ramirez each scored 3 points to seal the Rangerette victory.
White Deer committed 18 turnovers in response to Perryton’s smothering defense. Perryton only had 9 turnovers in the win. Perryton held a dominance in rebounding by outrebounding the Does 29-8.
Merkel led all scorers in the contest with 16 points. McGaughy and Navarrete finished with 9 points each. Ramirez totaled 7 points in the win. Mackenzi Stokes and Valenzuela rounded out the score with 4 and 3 points respectively.
Perryton shot 12 of 20 for 60% from the free throw line on Saturday. They converted 15 two-point baskets and 2 three-point buckets in the victory. The Rangerettes stayed out of foul trouble despite aggressive play. The Does only shot 3 free throws going 1 for 3.
The victory brings the Rangerettes’ season record to 2-1.
