Not the Typical Bird Dog
Before it became known as a pampered and pompadoured show dog, the standard poodle was best known as a bird dog. Bred as a water retriever and duck hunter in the 1600s, it became popular with the upper crust because it was a favorite of French royalty. In recent decades, some hunters are trying to re-establish the breed as hunting dogs, citing its intelligence, speed, and strong swimming abilities. Even miniature poodles have shown success as hunting dogs, particularly when retrieving smaller ducks.
