Sign of equality

The equal sign (=) was first recorded in a mathematics book called “The Whetstone of Witte” by Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde in 1557. It took a while to catch on. The second appearance of the sign was over 60 years later in 1618. It still didn’t get used much until the works of mathematicians Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz much later in the 1600s.
