Economists have suggested for years that we’d be better served if the U.S. Mint ceased turning out pennies— the nation’s lowest denominational coin. Though some 140 billion pennies remain in circulation— many in jars, under sofa cushions, on sidewalks or playgrounds—their demise will be gradual.

City sales tax payment is up in August by 3.4%

The City of Perryton’s sales tax payment for August showed an increase over last August, as well as an increase in its year to date payments.The city received a payment of $292,277 for the month, up 3.4% fromAugust 2024. Its year to date payments of close to $2.1 million also increased 2.4%.

School board decides on tax rate

The Perryton ISD board met in a special called meeting on Monday, August 11.The meeting opened with open forum discussions of which there were none. The board then participated in a conference call with John Blackburn who gave the post-bond sales presentation.
Students at Perryton schools returned to classes on Wednesday for a new year. In addition to registering for classes, students at Perryton High School spent the first part of the week getting last-minute paperwork completed, meeting their new teachers, getting reacquainted with old friends, and signing up for school clubs and extracurricular activities.

Abbott hopes to cut taxes by limiting local spending

The Legislature reduced homeowners’ property taxes by $3.5 billion in the last regular session. Now the governor wants to further reduce taxes by capping how much cities and counties can hike spending, The Dallas Morning News reported.
