State audit finds major lapses in jail systems

A recent audit of the agency in charge of overseeing the state’s county jails faulted the Texas Commission on Jail Standards for failing to consistently investigate prisoner complaints, maintain accurate records or complete legally required inspections, theT exas Standard reported.

Good receives Jones Fellowship Award

Local attorney Keith Good was named as the recipient of the Perryton Lions Club’s Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.Good received the award at a recent Lions Club meeting. The award was presented by past District Governor Henry Wyckoff.

Quilt guild has program on borders

The Friendship Quilt Guild met June 11 at Community Worship Center.Freddie Seaman gave a program on putting in quilt sleeves and border basics. Most quilt shows now require quilt sleeves to be on the back of quilts being entered, no matter the size.

The Ochiltree County Commissioners’ Court met on Monday \\at the Ochiltree County Courthouse.Among other items on the agenda, the commissioners approved a resolution acknowledging the terms and conditions of the Help America Vote Act of 2002.

School board hears resignations, updates

The Perryton School Board heard about several resignations and new hires, among other items, during its meeting June 16.Resignations included Brody Coates, Yoherlian Benjarano, Rachael Cano, Brody Sutterfield, Jesus Soto, Wanda West, Teresa Snell, Antonio Gonzalez, Jared Straight and Mika Straight.

Oil Patch Golf Tournament is set for July 11-13

The Perryton-Ochiltree Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the annual Oil Patch Golf Tournament on July 11-13 at the Perryton Golf Course to honor the oil and gas industry in the Perryton area.The Oil Patch tourney is an 18-hole scramble for four players, with great payouts and hole prizes.
For the last session of Perry Memorial Library’s annual Summer Reading program, kids got to celebrate with a special foam party on last Tuesday afternoon. Kids broke out their swimsuits, sunglasses, and flipflops to dance and play in torrents of biodegradable, hypo-allergenic, soap-like foam shot out of a giant foam cannon.

City to begin enforcing vehicle parking ordinance

The City of Perryton will begin enforcing its front yard parking ordinance, according to Public Works Director Brandan Knapp.The ordinance, passed in 2008, says that vehicles must be parked on approved surfaces. That includes concrete, asphalt, gravel or pavers. Caliche does not count.
