Powerlifters dominate at home

Coach Casey Arruda, his staff and countless volunteers coordinated and ran the Perryton Invitational Meet Saturday at the Rangerette Center. Organized chaos is the only description that comes to mind when describing the event. People cheering, weights clanging, lifters waddling with wraps, green lights flashing and managers yelling lifting orders are only part of the joy of being at the meet. When the final weight change was done, the PHS powerlifting teams had dominated once again. The boys’ team won by 30 points. The girls’ team was victorious by an amazing 50 points. Perryton also swept the top lifter awards. Joseph Raissez and Estefania Espino were awarded best lifters in the light platforms. Robert Herndon and Andrea Fabela were awarded best lifters in the heavy platforms.

Rangerettes Basketball

The Rangerette basketball team hosted the Dumas Demonettes for a critical game on Tuesday. With a victory, Perryton could move into a tie for first place in district with Dumas. The Demonettes won the first game in Dumas by the score of 26-21. While the offensive output of Tuesday’s game almost doubled the first contest, the results were the same. Dumas pulled out a close victory, 43-41.

Dumas jumped out to a lead by the score of 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. Gisselle Hernandez worked hard in the paint to keep Perryton close with 4 points. Morgyn Vela and Cassidy Farney each scored 2 points in the quarter. Dumas guard Macie Medrano scored 7 points in the first period.

PHS Powerlifting

The Perryton High School powerlifting teams continued winning and improving at the Dalhart Invitational Meet on Saturday. Both the Perryton boys and girls took first place in the team totals. In addition, the Rettes had 7 first-place finishes and the Rangers had 5 top finishers.

Estefania Espino, Carolina Holguin, Brianna Cortez, Melissa Ramos, Alyson Ortiz, Andrea Fabela and Abby Vargas all easily outlifted their weight classes for first place.

Alicia Monreal took second in her group while Sabrina Olvera placed fifth in the same division. Evelyn Becerril and Sable Ortiz placed third and fourth in the same division. Freshmen Mya Valenzuela and Genesis Mendoza each placed third in their weight classes.

Rangers Basketball

The long rivalry between Dalhart and Perryton continued Friday night at Ranger Gym. The teams battled back and forth in a close game. The Wolves used a fourth quarter rally to defeat the Rangers by the final score of 68-64.

Cuyler Feger hit two three-point baskets to lead the Rangers in the first quarter. Anthony White scored 5 points while Brayden Klafka and Kevin Arellano scored 3 and 2 points respectively. Dalhart led by the score of 20-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Perryton took the second quarter as Ryan Davis knocked down 8 points. Daxton Rigdon, Feger and Pablo Perez each scored 3 points before the half. Despite the run, the Rangers trailed by the score of 38-35 at halftime.

The Rangers made a run to tie the score in the third quarter. White converted 5 points while Davis stayed hot with 4 more points. Perez sank a deep three-point shot and Klafka converted a free throw to round out the scoring totals for Perryton.

Rangerettes Basketball

The Rangerette basketball team closed out the first round of district play at home on Friday against the Dalhart Lady Wolves. Rang-erette Cassidy Farney bombed in the three-point shots and converted 10 points from the line to lead Perryton to a win. The teams were matched evenly through the first half, but the Rettes took control in the second half to win by the final score of 51-42.

The teams traded points in the first quarter and were knotted at 13 as it came to a close. Farney hit her first two three-point shots and totaled 8 points in the quarter to lead the Rettes. Gisselle Hernandez scored 3 points and Morgyn Vela scored 2 points to total Perryton’s 13 points.

The Lady Wolves outscored the Rettes in the second quarter to take a 25-23 lead at the half. Farney led the Rettes with 5 points. Molly McGaughy hit a long three and Hernandez secured 2 points under the basket in the period.

Rangers pick up tough win on the road

Rangers Basketball

The Ranger basketball team opened a tough district schedule in a tough venue on Tuesday in Borger. Perryton struggled a bit offensively in the first quarter, but so did the Bulldogs. The Rangers kicked up the defensive pressure and were led offensively by Brayden Klafka and Ryan Davis to control the final three quarters. Perryton won the game 55-47.

Klafka led the Rangers in the first quarter by hitting a deep three-point shot and a bucket inside the arc for 5 points. Daxton Rigdon hit a tough shot for 2 points and Tad Pshigoda converted a free-throw. Perryton led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Davis hit two three-point baskets and a free throw in the second, while Klafka continued to score inside the arc as each player scored 7 points. Felipe Hernandez entered the books with a three-point shot and Johan Carrasco hit a free throw to close out Perryton’s scoring in the period. The Rangers led 26-23 at the half.

Rettes pound the Lady Bulldogs

The Rangerette basketball team hit the hardwood running on Tuesday in Borger. Perryton jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a victory by the final score of 67-33. Offensive production was high and consistent for the Rettes in the contest. Perryton hard four athletes scoring in double digits for the first time this season.

Giselle Hernandez set the pace for Perryton in the first quarter. She hit a bucket from inside the arc and sank two free throws for 4 points in the period.

Five Rettes scored in the quarter including Paola Uribe (3), Molly McGaughy

(2), Morgyn Vela (2) and Cassidy Farney (2). Perryton outscored Borger by the score of 13-4 in the quarter and turned it up from then on.

Lady Deputies JV Basketball

The Lady Deputies hosted the Junior Varsity basketball team from Pampa Tuesday and came away with a big win.

The Perryton ladies scored 24 points in the first half while holding the Pampa team to 8 points. Perryton widened the gap in the second half scoring 21 points.

The Lady Harvesters continued to have trouble sinking their shots scoring 10 points in the second half giving the Lady Deputies the win 45-18.

Rangerettes roll over Lady Harvesters

Rangerettes Basketball

The Rangerette basketball team used strong second and fourth quarters to pick up a win in their second district game of the season. Perryton hosted the Pampa Lady Harvesters and took the victory by the final score of 42-32. The game was loaded with excitement, fouls and even a technical foul called late in the contest.

Perryton jumped out to an early lead by the score of 9-8 at the end of the first quarter. Gisselle Hernandez hit a long three-point shot and another shot from inside the arc for 5 points. Cassidy Farney was a perfect 4 of 4 from the line for the other Rangerette points.

Perryton took a larger lead in the second quarter. They outscored the Lady Harvesters 12-7. Farney cooled at the line but heated up from the floor, scoring 5 points in the period. Tori Rivera nailed a threepoint bucket while Elektra Rowlan and Hernandez each contributed 2 points. Perryton led by the score of 21-15 at the half.

Lady Deputies JV Basketball

Lady Deputies JV Basketball

The Lady Deputies opened district play Friday when they traveled to Dumas to take on the Dumas Demonettes Junior Varsity basketball team.

The first half was close as Perryton trailed by one point 16-15 at the end of the half. The third quarter was all Dumas as the Demonettes scored 14 points while holding Perryton to 2 points. Neither team was able to generate much offense in the final quarter and Dumas won 35-21.
