City sales tax payment drops

The City of Perryton’s sales tax revenue payment for October was down substantially from October 2012, but not surprising. Last October’s payment of over $497,000 was the second highest ever received by the city. This October’s payment of $410,391 was down around 17.5% from that payment. For the year, the city has received a little over $4 million so far, up 3.2% from 2012 payments to date.

Pampa is Homecoming foe

It is a Homecoming for the Perryton Rangers. Not only is Friday night at Ranger Field the annual Homecoming game, is also a homecoming for the Ranger team when they face the Pampa Harvesters. For almost a month, Ranger Field has been dark on Friday nights. The Perryton squad has logged over 1,500 miles traveling to Lubbock twice and Yukon, OK. Finally, the Rangers get to don their red jerseys and run out to a friendly venue. Kickoff has been set for 7:30 p.m.

One-Vehicle accident claims life of local man

A one-vehicle rollover east of town claimed the life of town claimed the life of a Perryton man, and caused the vehicle he was driving to erupt into flames, Thursday morning. The accident ocurred four miles east of Perryton on FM 377 around 8:35 a.m. According to Texas Department of Safety Trooper Chris Ray, a West Texas Gas 2009 International tanker, driven by Rafael Sosa, 34, attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle on the left. When he did so, it caused the driver's side tires to leave the roadway. Sosa brought the truck back onto the highway, and then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Police department has new personnel, sees promotions

The Perryton Police Department has promoted two officers, and hired two additional officers and a dispatcher. Officers Eric Kerl and James Ortiz have been promoted to sergeant, Police Chief Tony Hill announced. "I've been very pleased with the work of Kerl and Ortiz the last few years. I'm proud to promote them to sergeant," the chief said.

United Way drive hits 23%

The Ochiltree United Way fund drive total continued to clim last week. As of Friday, the campaign had reached 23% of its $122,000 goal with donations of $27,996.21. Two new 100% Companies were added to the list, meaning every employee contributed to United Way. Covenant Title Company and Frank Phillips College Allen Campus joined United Supermarket and Perryton National Bank on the list.

Voter registration deadline is Monday

Monday Oct. 7 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 amendment election. There are nine proposed amendments on the ballot, one relating to the creation of a water fund for Texas. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: "The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas and the State Water Implementation Revenue Fund for Texas to assist in the financing of priority projects in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water resources. A thorough look at the complete set of proposed amendments will be published in an upcoming issue of the Perryton Herald.

Five members of the Perryton High School Choirs were selected for the All District Choir during auditions Sept. 28 at Tascosa High school in Amarillo. Selected were, in front, Cesar Bernal, 11th chair tenor two; and in back, Ryan Roberts, seventh chair tenor two; Patrick Cockrell, second alternate bass one; and Miguel Escobar, 12th chair, bass one. Not pictured is Bodin Barton, 16th chair bass two. They will next audition for the All Region Choir on Nov. 2 at Caprock High School.

Annual Book Fair slated for October

The month of October is the time everyone looks forward to the annual Book Fair, held at Perry Memorial Library and sponsored by the Jennie June Club of Perryton. The Jennie Junes have been sponsoring the book sale since 1970. Books are available for a good price - 50 cents for hardbacks and 25 cents for a paperback.

Friday’s storm drops over an inch in some areas

The area saw another nice bit of moisture last week when thunderstorms moved through the area, and dropped rain, and some small hail Friday evening, and continued overnight into Saturday. The official rainfall total, as recorded at KEYE Radio, was .60 of an inch for the period. Roger and Janice Brown, at 100 N. Industrial, reported 1 inch.
