PHS program on Nov. 11 to honor veterans

Perryton High School will host a program on Monday, Nov. 11 to honor the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. The program will be held in the high school auditorium at 9:30 a.m. Invitations were sent to the veterans whose names were on the list, but all veterans are welcome to come. Coffee and coffe cake will be served in the cafeteria prior to the program. The breakfast refreshments will be provided by Claudette File and the family and consumer sciences classes.

OLD DOCUMENTS DISPLAYED AT MUSEUM

On Sunday, Nov. 3, Dr. David Baum, director of the Remnant Trust at West Texas A & M University, gave a lecture and displayed a number of old documents at the Museum of the Plains, including the front page of the New York Times from Sept. 2, 1862 with the first public printing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The first week in November, the documents will be available for Perryton High School teachers to use with their classes. WEST SIDE LIGHTS

As B and B Solvent continues the concrete construction work for the Main Street renovation project on the west side of the street, B and G Electric of Pampa, installs the new light poles and fixtures. Up in the bucket, Joel Avarado, at left, and Jeremy Hill attach a light fixture to the new pole, as Roy Bailey at the truck assembles the next light. The renovation will run from Sixth Avenue to 13th Avenue.

WILLIAMS FUND-RAISER WINNERS

Williams Intermediate held a fund-raising contest, with the fourth and fifth grade students selling cases of Coke products to raise money. Pictured are the winners at Perryton Office Supply-Radio Shack who helped sponsor the event, providing the top prizes. They are, from left, store manager Saul Castanon, fifth grade winner Dayton Goldsberry, fourth grade winner Halley Farney and store associate Alina Spescia. The funds were used to purchase OneBoards for the school.

GHOSTS, GOBLINS AND WITCHES

John and Sandy Campbell, at 901 Michigan, have a yard full of characters designed for Halloween and the enjoyment of the youngsters. The Campbells have been decorating for many years, adding a new goulish attraction each year. “We do it for the youngsters,” Sandy Campbell said. “We like adding a new surprise for them each year.”

CDC receives statewide award

The Perryton Community Development Corporation was presented with the 2013 Community Economic Development Award by the Texas Economic Development Council. The award was announced during the TEDC’s annual conference awards luncheon Oct. 17 in San Antonio. The award, begun in 1995, is given to honor excellence and exceptional contributions of Texas communities in economic development.

Rare documents program, display set at museum

Dr. David Baum, director of the Remnant Trust at West Texas A & M University, will be at the Museum of the Plains on Sunday, Nov. 3. The lecture and reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. He will bring ancient texts and documents for people to read, hold and discuss. These original works are made available to colleges, universities, faculty, students and the general public. Many rare documents at most institutions of higher learning are kept under lock and key, available only to serious researchers or professors of history.
