Rites held for Pletcher

Thomas E. “Tommy” Pletcher, 87, of Perryton died June 2, 2018. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 5, at Community Worship Center with Rev. Mike Waterbury and Rev. Kevin Britton officiating. Burial was in Ochiltree Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. He was born Oct. 4, 1930 at home in rural Ochiltree County. He graduated from Perryton High School in 1948. After high school, he owned a laundry and dry cleaning route until 1951. He attended Apostolic Faith Bible College in Baxter Springs, KS. He married Joan Bryan on June 3, 1951. They traveled in the ministry, conducting the musical part of the services for several ministers, for five years. They then moved to Perryton, where he managed a trailer house sales business for his father until 1961, when he went into the life insurance business until his retirement. Active in Community Worship Center, he served as an elder for 38 years, as well as board chairman and treasurer. He was Sunday school superintendent for many years, and taught an adult Sunday school class for 21 years. He was city director for the Jesus Video Outreach in 1996-97, and served on the Faith Outreach Student Center advisory board at West Texas A&M University for 20 years. He also served on the Youth for Christ board. A Kiwanis Club charter member, he served as president and secretary, and was treasurer of Kiwanis Youth Club for eight years. He was named Kiwanian of the Year several times. He served as Lt. Governor of District 27, and in 1973-74, was one eight awarded by the District 27 governor for exceptional leadership and devoted service. He was president and fund drive chairman of the United Fund, now United Way. He was president of the Perryton Country Club and the Perryton City Golf Club Association, as well as serving on the Perryton City Golf Club Association board. He was named the Outstanding Young Citizen by the Jaycees, and also served as an officer of the organization. He was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce fund drive in 1978, and was honored as Citizen of the Year in 1978. As a Kansas City Life Insurance agent, he was named agent of the month for the company, agent of the month and agent of the year for the regional office several times. He also qualified for the President’s Club numerous times, and served as vice president and president. He received the National Performance Award and the National Quality Award from the National Association of Life Companies, and the National Sales achievement Award several times. He received the All Star Honor Roll Award for Kansas City Life in 1977, qualified for the Texas Leaders Round Table and General Agents and Managers Association several times. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Alice (Kile) Pletcher; one sister, Bertha Owens; one brother, Henry Pletcher; and a foster brother, Marcus Adair. He is survived by his wife, Joan, of the home; one son, David Pletcher of Piedmont, OK; one daughter, Diane Pletcher of Yoakum; three brothers, Paul Allen Pletcher of Pampa, Floyd Pletcher of Canyon and Dale Pletcher of Arlington; one sister, Roberta McClenathan of Portland, OR; two grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. The family suggests memorials to Community Worship Center, P.O. Box 845, Perryton; or to one’s favorite charity.
