Uncle Mort doesn’t own a smartphone, and only recently found a well-worn flip phone for $10 on eBay. Neither does my ancient uncle own a computer, claiming he’d never remember where the off/on switch is, or how to use it should the screen magically light.

Measles cases surpass 500; outbreak could last for months

The number of measles cases in West Texas and the Panhandle has surpassed 500, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported. Health experts say the outbreak likely will continue to grow and could last for months.Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, The News reported.

Bird flu cases in animals found in Ochiltree County

Several animals in Ochiltree County have tested positive for avian influenza, also known as bird flu.According to veterinarian Dr. Randy Skaggs, two skunks and two cats have tested positive for bird flu.

County receives light rain, snow

Ochiltree County received some light rain last Friday and even a dusting of snow on Saturday.KEYE Radio’s official rainfall total was .55 of an inch.Elsewhere around the county, Mary Dudley, in the central part of Perryton, reported .65 of an inch of rain.

Stone Age Fair set May 3

The annual Perryton Stone Age Fair is scheduled for Saturday, May 3.The fair will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ochiltree County Expo Center.

County producers eligible for reimbursement from recent wildfire damages

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced that Ochiltree County is accepting applications for the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) to address damages from the Windmill Fire that occurred March 14-March 20, 2025.

Texas leads nation in toptier universities

A new report from the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching indicates 16 universities in Texas have reached Tier 1 designation, the most coveted level. That means the state is home to more such institutions than any other state.
