Elmyra was born on Feb. 1, 1919, at home in Beaver County, OK to Jean and Nellie (Colbert) Cone. Elmyra married Earl Dean McGarraugh Oct. 21, 1935, in Lawton, OK where her brother, Alvia Cone was stationed in the Army.

They returned to Ochiltree County where they lived and farmed north of Perryton, for the next 54 years. Earl passed away July 4, 1989. They had four sons, Melvin Leroy, Raymond Earl, Eddie Jean, and Douglas Clyde.

While farming, Elmyra worked by Earl’s side in the fields and served meals to large crews during sowing and harvesting times.

They had two large hen houses and sold their eggs in town every Saturday, to pay for building their large barn, which still stands on the farm. They held barn dances in the loft and had live bands play on Saturday nights. They also raised registered Angus cattle.

Elmyra was an active member of the First Christian Church, serving in the women’s organization, teaching, and helping in other areas as needed.

She was a member and officer in her local home demonstration club, Sorosis Club, and enjoyed china painting. Elmyra and Earl loved to dance and were members of the Chesterfield Club.

Her passion was porcelain art, primarily china painting, and she moved to Amarillo in 1992 so she could develop her skills and share her talents with others. She had friends all over the Panhandle who also enjoyed china painting, and they would gather in Amarillo to share this interest together. She taught and attended classes for many years.

She loved to travel and was always ready to take a trip with friends. However, Perryton was always home, and this is where she spent her final days surrounded by family. As we often heard her say, “The Lord has blessed me each and every day”.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl McGarraugh; son, Eddie Jean McGarraugh; parents, Jean and Nellie Cone; brothers, Floyd and Johnson Hammonds, and Alvia, Vernon and J.M. Cone; and sisters, Jimmie Schmucker and Rhetta Anderson.

Survivors include son, Melvin and wife Peggy (McKay), daughters Stacey (Dave) Lash, Shannon (Gary Golder), and son Craig; grandchildren Robin McCallie and Zak Cron, Erin (Luke) Avery and Titis Tomkey, Rachel Knighten, Taos (Garrett) Good and Gus; son, Raymond and wife Kay (Munger), sons, Clayton and Travis and wife Laura (Bjork), daughter, Kenda (Bryan) McVeigh; grandchildren, Ashlee (John) Fortune, Brandon, Raelee, Charlee, Ashton; Casey, Daniel, Naomi, Jacqueline (Nasir) Kureshy, Matthew; Annie (William), William, Bobby, Charlie Cummer; Doug and wife Carol (Munger), sons, Jeremy and Shelley (Griffin, Jason and Elizabeth (Morgan); grandchildren, Auresa, Morgan and Milena; granddaughter, Quinetta McGarraugh Aguilar and sons Shaun Hayes (Kasara), Alexa and son, Justin Aguilar.
