Throat soothers
Cough drops are known by many different names — throat lozenges, cough sweets, troches, cachous, and more — but they date all the way back to 1,000 BC in Egypt’s Twentieth Dynasty, when they were made from honey flavored with citrus, herbs, and spices. In the 19th century, cough drops were often made with morphine and heroin. Nowadays, they’re made with ingredients like eucalyptus oil, menthol, peppermint oil, pectin, or a light anesthetic like benzocaine.
