Early Libraries

The earliest libraries appeared about 5,000 years ago in the Middle East. They consisted of archives of commercial transactions and inventories inscribed on inch-thick clay tablets, which were stacked on edge, side by side, with contents described by a title written on the edge. It’s generally agreed that these archives mark the end of humanity’s prehistoric period and the beginning of recorded history.
