Promenaders to celebrate 40 yearsThe Perryton Promenaders square dance club will celebrate its 40th anniversary Thursday, March 19, through Saturday, March 21. On Thursday, a square dance will be held from 8-10 p.m. at the VFW building, with special caller Lanny Weakland from Omaha, NE.

The Jennie June Club met Feb. 11 at Perry Memorial Library.Lisa Brosowske introduced the guest speaker, Chief Ed Hanna from the Perryton Fire Department. He became the new fire chief after the retirement of Paul Dutcher.Hanna gave background information on himself and how he came to be here.

Grajeda named Young Careerist

Erika Grajeda was named the Young Careerist for February by the Panhandle Professional Women’s Club.She has two sons, Carlos Tafoya, 14, and Everado Tafoya, 11.She is the branch manager of Sun Loan Company.

Floyd wins big in primary for county judge

Close to 1,200 Ochiltree County voters turned out to cast ballots in the March 3 primary election. That included 1,120 Republican and 76 Democratic voters.Wayne Floyd was the big winner in the County Judge race. He received 912 votes. The other candidate, Brenda Austin received 177 votes.

PHS Choir soloists qualify for State

Perryton High School choir students competed in UIL Solo-Ensemble Contest last month at Canyon High School, with more than 20 students qualifying for state competition.All of the PHS students competed as soloists; there were no ensembles in this year’s contest.
Members of Leadership Perryton XXIV participated in Reality Day, a poverty simulation, on Wednesday, learning about some of the realities and challenges faced by low-income families. Participants in the simulation were given simple roles to play during the project, including newly unemployed people, homeless people, recipients of TANF funds, senior citizens on disability, and single parents. The task assigned to all was to provide basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute weeks.
